Instead of giving you useless stats and technical jumbo I went level to the source for some handy tips and interviewed some of the top heating and air conditioning technicians in the Omaha area. I figured you'd find these tips useful.

Q: So what is the first thing we should do to rule whether we need to mend or replace our air conditioner?

A: One of the first things we want to do is look at our face unit and study it. We want to take a look at the face fins to see if they are flattened or damaged. whether it has been damaged by hail or children or anyone it may be if you have a 20% or 30% smashed over fin that directly relates to how much energy you may be wasting as well as how uncomfortable you may be in your current home.

Q: Some outdoor units are exposed while others are encased, Which works better?

A: Well we want to protect those fins from the weather and damage from cutting grass so yes an enclosed air conditioner unit would be better.

Q: face of taking a look at the face of the unit what else should we be considering?

A: The first thing I'd like to talk about is Seer, that's short for Seasonal energy Efficiency Ratio. It's a way of measuring air conditioners. Let's say you have a 10 Seer unit. Let's say it does 10 miles to the gallon. We'll compare it to cars because more people can communicate to that. If I had a 20 Seer unit that would be like 20 miles per gallon. Can you imagine a hundred percent growth in your efficiency?

Q: So the higher the Seer, the higher the energy savings?

A: That's right.

Q: What else can we look at?

A: One of the last things we'd want to do is to look right at the fastener on the unit. The maker should have put the date of manufacture. The imagine that is leading is because and air conditioner should last between 12-17 years. So obviously if your air conditioner unit falls between that range you would be a great candidate for exchange simply based on efficiency and the lack there of.

Q: It's a lot harder to read the labels on the older models. What do we do if they are unreadable?

A: Well that's when the professionals come into play. Not only can they rule the age and efficiency of your current unit, but just like a doctor they can rule what the best policy of operation could be for you. Remember it is not just about the cooling, but the full, indoor air ability of your home.

I hope these tips help you in your decision on whether you should replace or mend your air conditioner.
